Nitrate Testing 1997-2001

In Idaho, nitrate is the most common contaminate in ground water. Nitrates come from nitrogen in animal or human waste, fertilizer, or decaying plant material which seeps into the soil. Between 1997 and 2001 the District worked to test and analyze well water for nitrates in Genesee, Lewiston, Uniontown, Lenore and Culdesac. Of the 43 samples taken, it is determined that 90% are under the federal threshold value concentration while 47% tested positive for total coliform, not to be confused with fecal coliform.
